The problem
The school’s NEC SL1100 phone system failed, and replacing it with the same type of system was no longer a viable option. Moving to VoIP was necessary, but the available hosted services came with significantly higher recurring costs.
What I did
- Researched replacement approaches and selected FreePBX.
- Created and configured a dedicated virtual machine in the existing Proxmox environment.
- Selected, configured, and provisioned phones for multiple user and classroom needs.
- Extended service across five locations using the site-to-site VPN infrastructure I had configured.
- Established VM backups through a Proxmox Backup Server at another location and separate configuration backups to S3 storage.
- Administered and supported the system after deployment.
The result
By deploying and managing FreePBX internally, I reduced projected monthly VoIP costs by 75% while supporting approximately 50 phones across five locations. The system is backed up at both the virtual-machine and FreePBX configuration levels.
